Seriously though, I am puzzled why it still has bass reeds left on it. You are very fortunate - it must be something to do with where you live. Over here we are so terribly afflicted with Bass Reed Drop-off Disease (BAREDOD). Every melodeon and accordion player goes to their instrument in fear that, overnight, they will have somehow become the next victim and that when they pick up their box, they will hear that stomach-churning rattling from the left-hand end of their instrument, signifying the loose jumble of bass reeds tumbling around inside. Despite intensive research, the cause of BAREDOD remains uncertain, but most experts agree that it is spread by a tiny insect which lays its eggs on the wax, the emergent larva then feasting on the wax until it is completely eaten away. Why it only attacks the bass end is not clear, but it may be something to do with the fact that the insect larva is sensitive to high frequency vibrations and so cannot live in the treble end of the instrument.
The increased incidence of BAREDOD in recent months has been linked to both climate change and to the smoking ban now in place in UK pubs. It is thought that tobacco smoke previously kept the little blighters at bay. Now they have free rein and attack all wax-reeded instruments willy-nilly. I don't know where all this will end. Perhaps someone will come up with a genetically engineered wax that will be toxic to the larvae. You don't know how lucky you are. I was out playing at a session last night, so going to check my melodeon now. God, I hope it's still OK.
