Hi again all,Further to my recent topic B/C or D/G andfollowing your advice, I last night plucked up courage andheaded to my first 'session', needless to say I was extremely nervous and hita few bum notes (it's so much easier at home) but all in all, I was warmly welcomed and everybody joined in with everytune I attempted!I was politely advised to aim, if possible, to select two tunes and play them together. I hadsuspected this would be the case, which brings me to my next question, which tunes 'go together'?I love and can play 'Shoe the Donkey' would that match up with 'Sonny Brogan's Mazurka'? or can anyone suggest another? Also 'Peg Ryans' and 'The Rakes of Mallow'? Is there a list or how do I know?I am going to email one of the musicians from last night and ask the same question but I would be interested to hear your views.Kind RegardsSkipy

for session playing there are absolutely no rules as to  which tunes 'go together'  You can select two with the same timing eg 2 reels or 2 jigs or 2 waltzes  or change the tempo between tunes - in Scotland a set of eg a march, a strathspey and a reel are   popular. There are many combinations  that can sound interesting eg a slow airfollowed seemlessly by a hornpipe or whatever. Try to have at least one 'spare' set of tunes in case some sod plays yours before you get the chance to.

Having said that for starters go for 2 tunes that you can play well and that are reasonably well known so others will join in and carry them on if you  loose the plot! ( if everybody else is playing them nobody will notice if your not - just press the air button, continue to move the bellows and indulge in a bit of miming!.

For dance music the selection of sets (2 or3) tunes needs more careful consideration  as each should run seemlessly into the next without feeling as if you have ' missed a gear'  , the change of tune being marked where possible by a change of key.  I tend to test combinations of tunes by mixing up the A & B parts randomly to make sure the tempo and feel of the tunes is the same  and that there wont be a sudden sort of lurch that will put the dancers off so to speak.

The first time is always the hardest.  I've been learning for the past two years and only now feel confident is enough tunes to lead a tune or two at sessions.  I still have off days where I mangle the tune.  To answer your point about tunes that go together here are a few that I've played or heard in different sessions:

Winster Gallop & Rakes of Mallow - quite hard to change as the first few notes are the same-ish

Cock o'the North & Rogue's March - again similar starting notes

Jenny Lind & Grandfather's Tune

Michael Turner's Waltz & Sherborne Waltz (aka The Orange in Bloom)

Portsmouth & Newcastle

I'm sure there are many others but I hope these help.  My morris side also plays an eight tune set.  I've played a portion of it, ie Bobby Shaftoe, Early one Morning and In & Out of the Windows.  That seemed to work!

Good luck.

folkworks at the sage, gateshead , have 3 books of session tunes  on sale and possibly a another in the pipeline. Each  has a cd included in which the tunes are firstly played very slowly and then later on in sets of 2 or 3  at a moderate session speed. All are played without addition of unnecesary fancywork so they can be learned easily by ear or from the dots or a combination of the two.  I think the music room at cleckheaton may also be selling them.  They do exactly what they are designed to do i.e. help newer players to develop a repertoire of fairly well known tunes . I very much commend them!
