Anyone else going to this?: "Blowzabella Day is a day of workshops followed by a dance in the evening. You can come along to the evening dance, or just to the daytime workshops, or both. The workshops begin at 10am and finish at 4pm. The evening gig starts at 7:30pm and finishes at 11:30pm. It's a dance but it's OK if you just want to come along and listen. There will also be a free acoustic stage for anyone who is attending and wants to play. People of all ages are very welcome. All the workshops and the dance are in the same venue." More here: http://www.blowzabella.com/ Andy Cutting, among others, is doing a workshop. Cheers Fi

I'll be there, but probably not doing Andy's workshop as too scary, may be doing Paul James's ensemble with my whistle  - which is also quite scary actually.... plus will be at dance in the evening.

Ayla,

I can guarantee that Andy's workshop will not be scary. He is one of the best teachers you could meet. I went for a week of workshops with him at Folkworks summer school when I could hardly play a thing. He was sympathetic and encouraging and I got enough ideas to keep working on for the next year at least. Even if you don't play a note just listening to him describing his approach to playing will be so helpful. Get signed up NOW!

Well that was a completely smashing day. Thanks to Andy for a great workshop, hugely entertaining and informative, now I must just get used to playing bass with my little finger . Brilliant dance in the evening too, if a tad boiling hot in the theatre )

Cheers

Yes, get that little finger going! The extra strength you develop in it will also come in handy whey you start to learn the fiddle.

Hi Fee - have only just got back, yes smashing is the word! Theo will be pleased to hear that I did make it to Andy's workshop and it was fine, enough people for me to hide behind, even if I did wander in (very unfashionably) late, and was good to see a familiar friendly face in there (and press some of the buttons on your lovely box!). Yes will have to start practising using that little finger...and was very interested in his variations on the lefthand jig rhythms. Dance was brilliant as Fee has said and unspeakably crowded for the first few dances but it seemed to sort itself out after a while. Haven't seen BZB for a while and it just reminded me how many fabulous tunes they play that I really want to learn - Round the corner, Chris Wood's North Downs Way, origins of the world (I think it's called)....

I am - to my surprise - finding it to be not too difficult! The poor thing aches a bit but I'm sure it'll get strionger, and I possibly need to fiddle with straps a bit to get my hand exactly where it needs to be. This is on the Pokerwork too, which seems to have much 'higher up' bass buttons than the Saltarelle (which is being mended).

Andy said in the workshop something like "it will be much harder to get muddled if you do use all four fingers", and would you credit it, he's right (of course ). I have to concentrate a lot at the moment, particularly on tunes I know well, as the fingers want to go where they always went, but I think it'll ultimately make things a lot easier for me.

As for the fiddle, well, it's sitting in the corner at present, taunting me .

Cheers

Fi

Yes I'm finding getting through the little finger pain barrier the hardest part - but at the moment, I'm just practising for short spurts, so as not to get myself some horrid rsi type thing, as it doesn't feel at all natural yet, especially as I seem to have quite a few tunes in G that just oompah unadventurously between the G/D and C buttons.

How did you get on with the dancing on Saturday night in the end Fi?

We joined any number of set dances (which are fine), and that French one where you pass your partner on each time (chapelle??), Maggie and Tim made us, it was OK, and a good indication of the various levels of dancing expertise in the room!.

We managed two Scottishes (after I had said 'I'm sure we can manage that!!!) and a Mazurka, the former we were better at than the latter! But we were still quite pleased with selves. My main problem is that I can't see where I'm going at all becuase Nick is so tall. So he really does have to lead, which is quite difficult if not used to it I suppose. But I think we were OK. We need a fair bit more practice

Cheers
