Hello melodeon mates! Some of you will know Emmanuel Pariselle as he taught at Melodeons at Witney last year. We started a discussion then which is now at a very exciting stage. Emmanuel is coming to SUffolk in March 2007 to run a week's course where you can make your own high-quality single-row melodeon. That's the good news. The bad news is that we already have a lot of interest in it, and you are unlikely to get a place in 2007. The good news ... is that if this goes well we shall run it again, and would really like to know how many of you out there might be interestd for the future.Emmanuel has run this course at La Chatre in France earlier this year, and has this to sayabout the course:"The boxes we will make are a copy of the Monarch (one row melodeon from around 1900). I like to make it in walnut wood (dark) or pear tree (light) wood with a little line of marquetry along the bellows. I use Binci a mano professional reeds and Galaci or Marconi bellows, and I put inox metal buttons and metal corners as is traditional. You can also put an extra button: in D this would have a C/G# reed to play in G major and A major like on the new black melodeon of the photo with the Monarch. The options for tuning are very large, C, D, G, Bb, Eb or anything else you want. It's a group adventure, somebody can be bad at wood work and a very good reed tuner ...!"There are more details, photos etc on the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust website atwww.eatmt.org.ukin the Melodeons and More section. Please do get in touch if you would be interested in the future. Hope to see a number of you at next year's Melodeons and More event on 31st March 2007. Again, get in touch to register your interest, as we send out booking forms in December. Emmanuel will be teaching, and the other main guest tutor next year will be Ed Rennie of the Bismarcks.Katie

I'll be there (as you know, Theo) at the M&M day; I'm running a Welsh Tunes workshop. Couldn't get on the melodeon making course - I left it too late. Another time, I hope!

I'll be at the Day (think the making one's own melodeon course a touch beyond me at this stage...)

I'll be going -- and attending Steve's Welsh tunes workshop. My family will also be there for part of the day, not participating but surely hanging around the stalls to some extent.

Yep, was there. Nice to catch up with so many of you, you looked to be very busy Theo so I didn't get a chance to say Hi. The 'Stowmarket' built one rows looked and sounded brilliant, I even had a go on one or two and they were just great to play. I really enjoyed the concert, especially Sandra Kerr and Emmanuel Pariselle tunes at the end. Plenty of banjo jokes from Emmanuel too :-) Well done to Katie and EATMT for another great set of workshops.

I also enjoyed meeting such a lot of melnetters -- perhaps we need a secret handshake? And I too didn't get close enough to Theo to say hello.

What a lovely day - and those melodeons they made on the week-long course were incredible - looked and sounded great.

Felt fairly empowered by the whole day - playing with other people seems to put things in perspective somewhat and you tend to focus on the fact that you're managing to play something at all rather than all the mistakes you're making - whereas at home alone in the kitchen all you are aware of are the horrible noises, and clumsy attempts to get your fingers under control. Last year (after having been playing for just about 3 months) nothing would tempt me into the session but this year I did venture in (Steve was obviously more alluring this year ) - and managed to play one or two I knew in my fingers and busk through others I knew in my head - so apologies to people sitting next to me! Very entertaining moment was Louise and Cathy (sometime melnetters) wandering in just as the session ended all ready to go having been looking at a clock that hadn't been put forward...

And Ed Rennie's make em dance workshop was completely top - the guy's an all-round star

Thanks to eatmt team as usual for great day!

Hey Isla, I was there yesterday and feel exactly the same! It was a really great day, so well organised and the workshop were great, not to mention everyone else that turned up- everyone was soo friendly Free tea and cakes were a highlight too! Had a good session too with Simon Ritchie at lunch which was pretty cool. Polkas seemed to be the theme of the day!

Can't wait for next years event, and also the traditional music day in the late summer in stowmarket. Thats another great event. What workshops did you do yesterday?

Hello Otis - already mentioned Ed Rennie - his make 'em dance workshop - his idea being that you can either play so people 'can' dance (ie, they have a choice) or you can play so they have to dance (ie, they don't have a choice) - which goes some way to explaining the late great bismarcks' power over their audience (well me for one). Workshop focused on playing more staccato, leaving holes in the music and something called anacrusis which I understood when listening to him but couldn't pick up at the time - he also had some good exercises for working on independent finger movement - seeing as I'm beggared if I can get my fingers under control.

Maggie's afternoon melodeon orchestra was also fun - as I had to play standing up without the aid of a safety net and that kind of worked better than I thought it would... which ones did you do?

Fantastic day!

It was lovely to meet more melnetters and catch up with old friends.

It was a brillant marker for my progression for me to see how well I had progressed since last year.  Like you Ayla I had only been playing a few months then.  Steve session sounds like it was great fun.  Shame me and Cathy managed to miss it...ooops. Common sense has never been our strong point.  Loved Emmanuel and Sandra's tunes at the end.
