I believe the main procession starts about 6pm at the bottom pub and wends it's way through castleton stopping at each pub and for the girls to dance, before the garland is lifted off about 9pm ish. I think there is then a celebration at the maypole in the square.

As I said it is off the topic of melodeons but it's quite "folky" so I wondered if anyone would be around.

I might try to get there. Do you know if there is a session afterwards?

Castleton Garland is tuesday 29th of May - a celebration of the restoration of the monachy

I don't think there will be a session. The event lasts until about 9:30 to 10pm, you might get some singing in the local pubs.

As I said it is well off topic but with a large contingent of melodeon players in Sheffield I wondered if any would be going to spectate/observe?

He did, Theo - Oak Apple Day, which as we all should know is 29th May - hence the morris tune title.

That is assuming a very narrow membership of this group. Who exactly are the "we" who should all know the date of Oak Apple Day? Should "we" all know the dates of every local festival and traditional event in the UK. How many know the date of Lilias Day for example? Or where its celebrated? Of course we can all find it with Google, but that's not the point.

It just gives an impression that this is an inward looking group only interested in English related topics. Of course there is a strong bias towards English music, which is quite acceptable and is no surprise considering the forum was set up by a leading exponent of English music. Nothing wrong with that at all, but its nice to create an atmosphere where box players from other traditions can feel welcome and can understand what we are talking about.

I don't think the topic originally included the date.

If it did please accept apologies to all for my rant.

Quite correct, Theo - I should have phrased that more carefully. The date of Oak Apple Day is just something I've always known - I suppose, like most people my age who went through the British school system contemoraneously with me, I must have learnt it at school. Promise to be more ecumenical in future!
