Just been looking at a restored Club model on eBay (Item No 270151503540, in case I cannot paste the link) It is described as having a "quite gentle" bass, achieved, I assume from the pictures, by the use of special "progressive" valves. the valves in the picture look normal leather type and somewhat bent to me. I have never heard of special progressive valves  can anyone explain just what they are

Erm, I think you may be in danger of doing the seller a disservice. They don't mention "progressive" valves (which I've also never heard of), just that they consider that this box has a more gentle sounding bass than usual.

Considering the obvious knowledge of the seller, and the offer to try out the box first, I think you could be looking at a bit of a "find" there for ?50.

Quite agree Andrew  , sounds a good buy even if  some of the valves may need renewing.  I was just curious as to where the  notion of 'progressive ' valves has come from & if I've been missing something!

The seller says it "has been restored" but the valves and wax look original to me. Replacing valves and rewaxing are the most fundamental part of a restoration in my book. It would be worth asking the seller what restoration work has actually been done. Aside from that it looks in good order.
