I was lucky enough to be at the Watersons concert at the Albert Hall the other week. Eliza Carthy accompanied herself for one song on a one-row box. Great singer, fantastic fiddler, very ordinary melodeon player, but that's not the point of this post. She appeared to have her pickups within two (pink) wristbands, with wires then running away to the sound system. The sound quality was excellent. Anyone know how this is done. Is this a simple solution to the problem of wanting quickly to change between boxes at a gig?

have never come accross it but it sounds a very good idea as the left hand mike will always be at a constant diatance from the reeds

I was there too.  It was Saul Rose's box (Castingnari one row) and I assume pick up system.

The bass mic was attached to a velcro wrist strap with the mic itself approximately where a watch face would be so just a little away from the box.  She had trouble getting the hand comfortable with the melodeon strap and microphone strap (it appeared to me) but once started she was fine.  I think the treble side was miked up with an SM58 (or similar) on a stand.  Tim Van Eyken definitely used this set up on the left side of the stage - I was on second row right in front of him.

I just remembered I have seen Tim use this set up before at Melodeons at Witney in 2005, treble side miked freely and bass side with a wrist mike.

She is a fine performer but it would have been better to let Tim or Saul Rose play while she sang that particular song.

Incidently the concert was fantastic but the melodeons were at a very low level in the sound through out.

Tim was using this system again last night when I saw him performing as part of Waterson:Carthy.
It worked well although the bass mike was mixed at a very low level, so you needed to listen hard to pick it out. However when you could hear it then his left hand playing was really impressive, particularly in some of the song accompaniments.

Not sure whether he's with them for the whole tour - their website is 'unhelpful', but definitely worth checking out.
