Hi, I recently acquired a Hohner 113 in D (ebay). Lovely sound. I notice that the bellows is 'springy' in that it closes quickly by itself and when playing I have to work a bit to keep it extended. It seems that the base side pushes back in (decompresses) more quickly. When left extended on the floor the bellows decompresses in more quickly than any other 1 row (Hohner) I have. Any ideas on if this is a bellows problem/reed problem/ or just needs more playing/extending to loosen it up.Regards,Tom.

Tom,

The bellows should not close of their own accord at all really.  My Pokerwork, (old), will close very slowly, and the Silvetta, (new), will not close measurably in an hour.  If you can actually watch the bellows closing then you have a substantial leak.  The most likely places are the folds of the bellows or where the bellows interface with the boxes.  This is easily checked as leaks can be felt/heard.  If the aforementioned is ok the leak will most probably be one or more of the valves over the reeds.  It sounds to me as if you need a reputable repairer.

Regards,

Ralph

Whilst I agree with Ralph that you most likely have a leak somewhere, my experience of the 113 is that the leaks are aroung the spoons. Check they are laying flat and sealing properly.

It seems that I too have a small leak in my Morgane, rapidly getting worse though. How do I find the leak, there is no visual sign of damage or something like that anywhere. Somebody suggested (as a joke) a small smoke bomb inside the bellows.

Hi Ralph, Lester,

Many thanks for your replies and great advice. I noticed there was air leaking from the spoons. I removed the spoons and taped over the air holes and this reduced the bellows problem. I noticed that the tension in the springs on the spoons was low and I replaced the 3 spoons with 3 from a newer (gold and red (no silver) bellows) HA114 with better tensions in the spoon springs. This was better. There is still movement in the bellows and when pushing the bellows in I noticed air leaking from the lowest 2 treble note pistons. So these may need a new spring or padding.  I could not find obvious leaks in the bellows folds so there may also be leakage on the reed valves. Have you any sources for bass spoons for hohner one-rows? I think the piston problem will need a good repairer. Anyone know of good repairers for melodeons on the east coast of Ireland, there are plenty in the west and south. I could always post the melodeon to Theo either.

Regards,

Tom.
