Hi,
I live in Brooklyn, NY but am currently in the process of relocating to northern Vermont. I play fiddle tunes on melodeons, at the moment mostly French Canadian, Irish, and some other styles, including Swedish, Appalachian tunes, and currently I'd like to learn more about playing to accompany singing (and hope that Jon can help with some advice on that topic at some point -- great accompaniment style on those CDs, Jon!!!). I'm thrilled about this new forum and website, finally a melodeon site that could be a place to offer/read more permanent resources, much like concertina.net.

"My current stable," as Lester says:
M?odie one-row, four-stop, in D (2x, selling one, or changing it to another key).
Saltarelle Piroulet in Bb/Eb/alt.
Castagnari Jacky in G/C/F (considering a change to A/D/G).
Gagn?one-row, three-stop, in A.

I'm looking forward to some interesting discussions here!

What is the Oakwood Model 7 configuration (voices, etc.)? Are they still produced? Oakwoods aren't often seen in the U.S. (And I've never seen one except in some blurry online pics.)

What is the Oakwood Model 7 configuration (voices, etc.)? Are they still produced? Oakwoods aren't often seen in the U.S. (And I've never seen one except in some blurry online pics.)

It's a small 3 voice box handmade in Leeds, England.  They are about the same size and spec as the Castagnari Tommy but have 2 bass stops (to remove thirds and low bass reeds) and the treble coupler is a nifty lever under the fingerboard to go from 2 voice to 3.

The reeds & everything else mechanical are bought in from Italy, but the reed blocks and casework is beautifully crafted - mine is sycamore and birds eye maple (it's the blurry pic in the melodeon.net header logo!) but they custom make in any wood - the main other line is walnut/mahogany.

Oakwood are currently only making their model 2 and model 7 (2 row 2 and 3 voice models repectively) - however, the waiting list is very long at about 2 years the last time I checked.  They used to make 7 models (including 2.5 row and 3 row 2 voice models, a larger 2 voice and a single voice mini-box).

They are lovely boxes - especially the finish - really classy.  The model 7 is great - punchier than any Castagnari or Saltarelle.  Some people have complained that the basses on the model 2 bend under too much compression leading to the instrument sounding out of tune, but this can be easily treated by opening the reeds up to cope with the pressure.

Cheers

'fraid not Clive

Just replaced them on the insurance money.  Speaking of Oakwoods, thank you to Martyn at Oakwood for selling me the prototype model 7 to replace the stolen one - I just have to measure bits now and again for them!

You've just reminded me how angry I was about the gits who nicked my Oakwood (I can forgive them the saltarelle!) - they just don't know quite how precious it was.

hmmmmm. maybe time for a stolen instruments register on the main site.

I live in several parts of the eastern U.S., depending on my employment situation. I originally play brass instruments (trumpet, horn), and anglo and english concertina (read about that on another Web site!). I have

a 1-row Hohner Cajun 114 in C (4 stop)
a 1-row Acadian (Marc Savor-built) in C a great box
a disassembled Hohner 1040 in G I'm tuning (I studied repair with Larry Miller a while back)

No doubt more to come someday.

Hiya,

First of all, excellent idea for a site (Cheers squeezy), particularly for someone like myself who's only taken playing his melodoen seriously recently.

From: Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire

Playing: Mainly in local sessions, although my goal is to play for The Morris.

Boxes: Delcia popular D/G

Castagnari lilly D/G (which I love dearly)

Is the 2-row Gabbanelli one of the 2-voice "improved Pokerwork-type" Gabbs that Rees Wesson is selling? How do you like it?

I bought the Gabenelli from Rees in March earlier this year and so far I've been pleased with it. Its a  a good no-nonsense box that is ideally suited  to playing for Morris, ECD and Pub sessions, it has a nice punchy sound without being too brash. I like its smooth and reasonably fast action action and there is no excessive movement on the buttons. I found that I took to it straight away. In my opinion its a very different instrument to the Pokerwork and is much more suited to my style of playing.  My main critisism is the lack of any adjustment on the left hand (Bass end) strap which other boxes in the price range tend to have,  also the movement of the air button takes a little bit of getting used to.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the response. Sounds like a nice box. I wonder what kind of reeds it has? Machine?
Regarding the left hand strap, here is French builder Bernard Loffet's site on repair tips. On this page (which gives directions for shortening a bass strap that is too loose even with the adjustor), you can see a picture of a simple external bass strap adjustor. I bet Bernard can supply one to you, and the "operation" seems simple enough to do on one's own. Has anyone added an adjustor like this?

The Casta is the best box I've ever played, saw it on Rees Wesson's stall at Chippenham FF last year and couldn't put it down.  It's got the quickest action and sexiest sounding low reeds.

Hello to everybody here and hello again to the people whose names I recognise from other places especially concertina net.fficeffice" / onload='javascript:showImageWidth(this,600,600)' class='AutoImageWidthTopic' style='cursor:poionter'>

As an introduction, I?e been playing the melodeon since 1970. I was at University in ffice:smarttags" / onload='javascript:showImageWidth(this,600,600)' class='AutoImageWidthTopic' style='cursor:poionter'>London and met a melodeon player at the college folk dance club.  I bought a second-hand red Hohner Erica which I still have though it gets used very little these days.

Some time later I bought a pokerwork (now gone) and then a black Erica which I still use as an ?utside?box for morris, particularly northwest morris in processions for its light weight and loud tone.

I had a foray into the world of B/C/C# with a Hohner Gaelic but never really got on with it and it was sold about a year ago.

My main instrument is now a Saltarelle Pastourelle III.

I recently acquired a very old box made by Dallape ( http://www.dallape-accordions.com/ .  It? a C/F club-tuned instrument. Dallape are a very old established company in Italy known for high quality accordions but they haven? made diatonics for some years.  The box was in a bad state, needing retuning and bellows repairs at least.  I took it to Nils Nielsen in Chalfont St. Peter for his opinion and I also contacted Dallape.  Nils was intrigued and said that Dallape are known for the high quality of their instruments, in particular the reeds, and that it would be worthwhile restoring the instrument.  Amletto Dallape answered my email and offered to put a date on the instrument if I sent photos and also to provide spare parts.  I got the instrument back from Nils a week ago, retuned and playable.  More work to do on it in the next few months.

Dallape live in Stradella, the Italian town which gives it? name to the Stradella Bass and I believe Dallape were instrumental in its development.  The melodeon has a bass action with some vestiges of a Stradella mechanism with only ten sets of reeds being shared by the 8 chord buttons.  Also the bass buttons open a pair of bass reeds and one of the associated chord reeds.

As an aside, I also play double bass (including Bridge Electric) and anglo concertina (Wheatstone C/G, Norman G/D and Lachenal Baritone C/G).

I saw Spiers and Boden recently at Lichfield. Shame the audience was not as large as the quality of the concert deserved (grovel, grovel).  I look forward to another opportunity to see them at Sidmouth if the workload permits.

Hi everyone

First posting from new subscriber;

My boxes consist of Castagnari Sander D/G, Castagnari Lilly C/F and a two/half row Ciardin laid out to my own spec just over a year ago.  The two Cassy's are great instruments, but I've been disappointed with the Ciardin tuning.  It's currently with Ivor Hyde in Somerset, who's been keeping my boxes together for many years now, to see if he can put it right.

Band-wise, I'm with Cats Whiskers (Bristol branch - there are two other line ups of the same name, I believe) and our present configuration has been playing together for about fourteen years.

Otherwise musically, I've been playing brass for (gulp) forty years or so, particularly bass trombone and tuba (I have a sousaphone) which I use both in Cats Whiskers and brass band (bass trom only).  Slightly off topic already, but for a charity ceilidh earlier this year we put together an all brass lineup for two sets and it went down a storm.

Wow! I'm assuming that the tone chamber ("cassotto") is what is making the low reeds sound so sexy. Has anyone heard one of these in D/G -- I'm wondering whether it would be a waste of a tone-chamber box to have it in those keys, or if, on the contrary, it would mellow-out the high dog-whistle notes on the G row?

Hallo Howard,

I'm glad to hear that you decided to have the Dallape worked on -- I remember you mentioning it on another forum. I'm curious what the repairer said about the reeds after he did have a look -- whether they are the fabled "twisted end" Dallape handmade reeds! (A friend has an amazing vintage Dallape, four voice with tone chamber, and it sounds SMOOTHER THAN SILK!)

Is it playable now? What do you think?
Incidentally, over the last 2 months or so I believe that 2 of these vintage Dallape diatonics have cropped up on eBay.

Andy,

Nils raved about the quality of the reeds but he didn't mention twisted ends.  He called the sound bell-like when it was finished.  It is playable now.  The bellows are worn and a bit floppy but not leaking very much.  The bass strap needs replacing but is ok for now.

I like sound both of 2 and 3 reeds and the response is good. I'm gradually getting used to the club layout which has its parallels with the layout of a 2 1/2 row.

Nils played a big Dallape piano accordion with tone chamber for me. Apparently it was played in the BBC orchestra. An amazing sound, like an organ.

 Hi to all,

Well done Squeezy a lot of us have thought about a site like this but you have actually got around to doing it.

I am in there with the not all that good / still learning / late starter  etc. I like the technical side of free reed instruments and do a bit of work on my old boxes. I play at my local folk clubs (they kindly put up with me) and a few local sessions.

 My boxes are:

Hohner Erica D/G, early example of the current model with a wooden finger board and a flat edge to the grill. I love / hate this box but it has  outlived all the melodeons that I have tried to replace it with.

Hohner Pokerwork D/G, my first melodeon and I have never got around to selling it

Honer Club I D/G, this is one of the older dark wood boxes and was C/F but was fitted with a set of new Hohner reeds by Ivor Hyde. I am still playing it in

 Hohner 1 Row 4 stop, I have a C and a D. I just love the sound they make.

I have a few more but  the list is getting too long

Melodeons that I have bought and then sold:

Oakwood model 2 D/G,  this was second-hand from Music Room and was a fine box. I never enjoyed playing it and it had a strange resonance between the D bass and the lowest D so when I found that I would much rather play the Erica I sold it.

Saltarelle Irish Bouebe D/G, this box convinced me that I did not like dry tuned melodeons. It was ok to play but I never did get to like the sound of the bass end ( I shall start a thread on the technical forum about this at some point)

Hi to everybody out there whom I know and to all those that I haven't met yet!

I acquired my first box,a C/C# Pokerwork,39 years ago for the princely sum of thirty shillings and have been collecting and playing them ever since. My favourite box, even though a bit quiet,is my Busillachio in G/D,it was originally B/C but I had it re-reeded about 20 years ago and kept the reeds if ever I want to put it back to original. Also in the collection are two G/D Pokerworks, one G/D Erica, one black G/D Dino Baffetti,a black Hohner in C/F with orange and blue painted birds on the front and an aluminium label on top inscribed"Vozes de Aco"and last but not least a G/D Castagnari single reeder(is it a Lily or a Tomy,I can never remember).I mostly play for North West morris, have dabbled with the occasional Border side and did once play in a Ceilidh band.

Regards to all.

JP

PS Does anyone know if "Vozes de Aco" means "steel reeds",and if so,is it in Portuguese?

Hi all

Excellent site - congrats & hopes for a rosy future.

I began playing melodeon pretty well by accident (!) a good few years ago now.  I play for English country dancing and morris. Based in the English Midlands. I have a  modest collection of boxes - main workhorse is a Saltarelle Pastourelle II D/G; also Hohner 4-stop 1-rows in C & G, an ancient Hohner 2-stop 1-row in C and a venerable little Lower Saxony/Bohemia-made 2-stop 1-row in F - rather lightly built but sounds LUVERLY......

Look forward to lots of useful exchanges with you all.

Gidday All,

I am amazed at how many melodeons people collect! I thought I was the only strange one. Pity I can't play well. I mucked around on them as a kid and could get a bit of a tune but have more trouble as an adult. I also played piano accordions but couldn't get a tune out until someone pointed out I didn't need to 'breathe' in and out for each note.

Anyway my collection includes an Erica C/G, frontanelli C/G, Hohner C/C#, Vienna C, Hohner 4 stop C(Chinese) and Hohner Panther(Chinese) C/G/F and a tina Hohner D40 C/G.

As I get older I can no longer handle the weight of a PA. I am looking forward to learning heaps from fellow members and improving my very poor skills!

Hi All,

I started playing melodeon in 1983 after joining Victory Morris (a Portsmouth[UK]-based Cotswold dance side) as a musician in 1981 (playing Hohner melodica). My DG box is used every week - so after 11 years I have become adept at replacing bass springs !

I also play for Barn Dance with Spanking Jack, The Old Skollobs Band (Victory's scratch band for our annual barn dance), and previously with Pieces of Eight (regrettably now disbanded).

My box stable:

Hohner pokerwork DG (for Morris)
Hohner Corona III ADG (miked-up for barn dance)
Castagnari Dony 2 1/2 row DG (for fun)

Other instruments:

Roland Juno 106 synthesiser
Yamaha DX7 synthesiser (both prevously used for barn dance)
Various MIDI tone generators
Hohner Melodica Piano 36
Cheap Spanish guitar
Ukelele

Other Interests:

Audio recording
Operating a friend's mobile disco
Clay pigeon and Target shooting.

Regards,

Richard
