There is quite a choice of free forum software that I've been looking at and I've set upthis one as a trial.. Please have a look round, try posting a message. Note you will have to register as a member before you can post. Please bear in mind that this isa temporary arrangementso please don't start melodeon discussion there.

Looks good, Theo. I'll be sorry to lose the wee avatar pictures that maybe tell you something about other members. Mind, I thought you looked like yours until I saw your band website!

It is still possible to have an avatar with phpBB, but I've not yet worked out how to set it.

We also need a melodeon.net logo. For various reasons I think the banner at the top of this page should be replaced in the new forum.

Can I take it that you do look like your avatar?

Here is an alternative demo forum setup for melodeon.net: using SMF form

And here is the link to the phpBB3 phpBB3 forum demo

Please have a good look round both, register if you like and try posting and leave comments in the demo forums.

Are you saying that you don't like the banner, and that we need a different banner in the new forum, or is it just that you need to add ('replace') the existing banner to the phpBB forum?

I was thinking that the banner we have here might need to be redesigned to use on the new forum. But on reflection it probably just needs to be adjusted to take up less screen space on the new forum. It can stay exactly as it is for the static pages.

hoorah  Ive done it this time.  on the SMF site, I entered an event on the calendar and voted on Steves poll - both were very easy to do.

One eensy bitsy thing -  the posts are in reverse order, with the oldest at the top and the newest at the bottom - the exact opposite of mel.net, which I found confusing at first, but Im sure I would get used to it.

Lin,

You can define the order of posts in your profile, oldest at top or newest at top.

I can see the calendar being a nice idea but I think access to add items should be restricted to moderators, otherwise I can see all kinds of odds and ends appearing on it.

Roy.

The SMF forum looks good. I get a MySql error with the phpBB when using the link in your post, but I'll try again later.

Yes - I'm now getting the SQL error message when trying to access the phpBB board. But the link worked fine up until around the afternoon of 17th October.

Sorry about the phpBB not working, I've messed it up. I've now deleted it but I'll put it back if there is a request.

I'm now also looking at another system - Drupal - which has the potential to operate a forum and information pages too. I've just installed the basic system and when I get its forum working I'll post that here too. It will save a lot of work in the long run if this works.

On the general strategy, I had a good chat with Squeezy John tonight and we seem to be thinking the same way. In essence the plan is to keep this forum as it is while we build the new system, starting with the discussion forum. When the new forum is running it's just a matter of pointing the domain name to the new site. After a few days to check that people can post to the new forum I will switch the aimoo forum to read only. We will have a year to be able to read all the old discussions before the flashlights re-appear. During that time we will also be able to investigate ways of making a better long-term access to the discussions that took place on aimoo.

There is a load more detail to add to that as things move forward.

I've been looking into how to get data out of Aimoo - I do have a possible way, but it's quite tricky, and will need me to write a fairly sophisticated program to do the job. Probably a few days work. Also, it's unlikely to be a perfect migration, since I doubt I'd be able to match up the posting user accounts, for example, but it would do most of useful stuff. We'll need to choose the forum solution first before starting on this of course.

Like Theo, I've been looking into CMS systems for the main website - I have to confess I've had no luck whatsoever finding one I actually like. Let's hope Drupal can do the job! There's literally hundreds of possible systems out there so I guess we'll have to keep looking if it doesn't!

Cheers,

Clive

I'll echo everyone's thanks to Theo and Clive for their work in getting the ball rolling, and to John Squeezy for being open to handing over to the new consortium!

Clive, do I take it you are thinking of "porting" past posts over to the new forum, complete with user accounts? If that is too much of a headache, perhaps the old discussion threads could simply be stored as a page views, hopefully searchable?

Thanks again

Not that I was asked to try it - but by way of an experiment - I currently have Adobe Acrobat making a PDF of the entire board!

It's been at it for the past 4+ hours and is up to 9371 files. Whether or not it's any use when it's finished, we'll have to see. But it will at least be searchable.

Yep, I had in mind a little custom written web spider that would produce an import file we could stick into the new forums. Unfortunately, a standard off the shelf 'webwhacker' type tool doesn't do the job, because of how the site's organised - it can't tell when it's picked up the same page again through a slightly different URL - so you end up with *lots* of duplicates. I think I know a way round that though... though for obvious reasons, I won't detail it here. Drop me an email to clive.williams@rectanglered.com if you *really* want to know what I have in mind.

Pah. Easy. One small caveat. Nobody's ever tried this before, from what I can see! :-)

Cheers,

Clive

Clive, it may also be worth noting that Aimoo have announced that a major upgrade is on its way which includes a backup tool. Whether its any help I don't know, and judging from the general tone of discussions on the Aimoo support forum its an open question whether it will ever actually happen. It has already been postponed from October 8th and there is no new date for it to be implemented.

Ah, interesting. I might just have to eat my words if they produce a backup tool that we can extract data from... didn't expect that.

Progress report:

I'm in the process of transferring the domain name melodeon.net to my web host. This in itself won't make any difference as it will still point to the old site. What it does mean is that I'll be able to point melodeon.net to the new pages/forum once they are ready.

I noticed several database errors with aimoo yesterday, so I thing its a case of the sooner the better to make the change.
