Science Channel's "How It's Made" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQglJZFjUsc Most of you have seen this. For those that haven't, here is Raynald Ouellet of Montmagny, Qu?ec showing how to make a diatonic accordion at his "Accord?n M?odie'" shop. He also founded the world festival of accordions called "Carrefour mondial de l'accord?n". See: http://accordeon.montmagny.com/carrefour/index_e.aspx?DetailId=164 Comments? Thoughts?WF

Comments? Thoughts?

Hi Wade,
Thanks for putting the video up. The player in the beginning and end is Raynald Ouellet, but the builder during the film is Sylvain V?ina (note the difference in build). I play a M?odie accordion (my favorite box) and have been to the workshop twice (thought it was funny to call it a "factory" in the video), but it was still enjoyable to see this. Note that the box being built is actually a three-stopper. The footage of the treble buttonboard being made was the most interesting to me, because this is somewhat different on a M?odie than on many other one-row boxes. Cool to see the "worker" (Madame V?ina, I believe) making the bellows. Finally, I'm glad they showed the attachment of the bellows to the frame at the end, because this makes the M?odie's construction different from all other one-row boxes currently made in North America. It's the way most Italian two- and three-row boxes attach the bellows.
I'm glad I got my M?odie years ago before the US dollar got so weak against the Canadian dollar!

I was surprised to see that the bellow pins were HAMMERED in place. Even using small quiet strokes of the hammer, I would think it was more safe to PUSH them in place.

Not exactly. It has three "one-sided" blocks. The middle one is nearly vertical, and the two side blocks are angled to the point where they are almost "laydown" blocks. My four-voice M?odie is like this, too (but with a two-sided middle block). My older four-voice M?odie (the one that Johnny Connelly now plays) was NOT like this, but rather, had "laydown" blocks much like a Cajun-made box. My preference? Well, since they were both in the key of D, I kept only one -- the one I thought sounded best!
