Nice work Theo. Which forum s/w have you decided to go with? Apologies if I missed this in another thread.
When do you hope to make the forum switchover?
Andy

Well at last things are moving.Progress so far:I've moved the registrar of the melodeon.net domain name so I can make any changes as required to point to the new site.In itself this will not make any difference that anyone will see.Clive has made an archive of the whole of the melodeon.net site excluding this forum. The archive of the sites is available temporarily atat this location. Please don't add this link to your book marks/favourites as it will change quite soon. Please have a look and report any errors here.Once the new forum is running the old forum will remain available but will be closed to new posts.

My apologies if I missed this, but could you say how we'll find out where the new forum is? Or will it be linked from the melodeon.net page? If I understood correctly, the melodeon.net page will continue to be at melodeon.net, except that it will be hosted somewhere else?

Andy (UK)
The forum software that got most approval by far was SMF form
Clive and I also had a look at CMS's for handling the other pages and have settled on Drupal. Choosing a CMS is more complex, because it has to do a wider variety of tasks than a forum, and its not really practical to run a comparative trial as it is with a forum.
There is a trial version here which has already been mentioned in earlier posts.
At present both of these are still just trial installs.
We did briefly consider using the Forum module in Drupal, but its not very good for our kind of discussion.
Andy (US)
Eventually www.melodeon net will take you to a new home page with similar information to the present one, and there will be a link there to the new forum. There will also be a link to the old forum, which by then will be closed to new posts. The old forum will remain accessible from http://melodeon.aimoo.com/.
If you have bookmarked the forum direct you will need to change that to go direct to the new forum.
The old forum will remain active for a short while after the changeover as an emergency contact.
There may be a short period, a few hours max, during the changeover when melodeon.net may disappear, but most people should not notice anything until the new pages appear.
If anyone does loose the ability to see melodeon.net for more than a day you can contact me via my website at www.theboxplace.co.uk
I'm hoping to do the first bit of the changeover early this week.

Next step started.
I have just set up a new hosting account for melodeon.net. There may be a period in the next day or so when trying to go to www.melodeon.net will fail.
http://melodeon.aimoo.com/ will still take you to this forum.

Now we wait for the new melodeon.net settings to propagate to DNS servers.
Once the new settings take effect you will see "ARCHIVE 07/11/2007" at the top of the white area of the home page.

melodeon.net now takes you to a copy of the site on the new server.
You probably will not see much different for a while. That is as it should be.
Ah we seem to have lost the logo from the forum. Let me see where it should be...
.... and thats it back!

The shell of the new melodeon net is now in place on the new server and can be viewed here
Just ignore the login boxes, its all accessible by visitors just like the old site.
Lots of pages are blank, but if you spot any glaring errors please report them here.
Once its been tested by a few people and seems ok I'll redirect melodeon.net to point at the new pages.

It looks very good and presents a nice fresh modern image which is very appropriate for melnet!
Thanks Theo, there's a pint behind the bar for you!

Great stuff Theo, it looks terrific. Do you want any graphics, or a melodeon favicon, or anything like that?
I promise to do some new reviews of my various boxes once we're in content generation mode. I've already written quite a bit about the Streb here I think.
I think we might want reviews of tutorials and tunebooks as well as instruments, and places to buy same in the resources. We'd also want repairers and teachers in the resources list I would think, and perhaps links to the websites for the other free reeds, plus also to anywhere there's information on the small organs that Americans call melodeons. We might want to provide some buying advice too, including things to watch out for on eBay and packing melodeons for shipping.
Rather offtopic, but are you coming to Witney? I have a slightly decrepit Liliput to show you.

I can't see it! (unless you've taken it down for some reason) All I get is a plain text page with hyperlinks, and the links take me to nowhere but error 404s. Or is it because I'm using Firefox?

and now
Web wizard.
Stop showing off, the rest of us are feeling even more inadequate than usual.
Many thanks old chap, as I was taught to say at skool.

Can't see what?
Please try again and post the web address you were using.
I have been changing things this morning, so if you tried while some of the changes were in progress you might have experienced a temporary problem.
The urls to use now are:
www.melodeon.net the main site
and the other parts are linked from there but they are:
forum.melodeon.net the new forum
melodeon.aimoo.com this forum
old.melodeon.net what it says on the tin.
the old demo smf and drupal installations will disappear shortly.
At present there is no clickable link in the new forum to take you back to the main site
Enjoy!

Ah, all OK now. I was seeing the http://melodeon.net/drupal page, so I suspect I was trying to see it when you were working on things (I was taken there by the original link you posted when you said 'and can be seen here').
It's very smart!
Cheers

Great stuff, Theo.
Is this the place to report bugs on the new forum? I suppose not. OK posting over there....
