I'm sure some of this online and real-world community of melodeon players know and recognise each other - but how do you otherwise spot a fellow melodeon player? (Assuming, of course, that the dead giveaway of a box is missing.) Are there any tell-tale signs? Do we need some kind of badge or secret sign?? Any serious or amusing suggestions out there?

Well, on my left forearm I have a small area of thickened skin about 3 inches above the wrist where by arm rests against the edge of the box! Not at all obvious to a casual observer. Its more the sort of thing that might be spotted in a post-mortem examination.

Now being more sensible I'd quite like to encourage forum members to use a their own picture instead of an avatar. Something we could do when we move to the new system.

well mudcatters have  abdge, but there are mudcatter volunteers who make them and market them, and I belive they have  announced that they are going to cease production.

a scem of that sort requires a volunteer to run it - so we are back to verbal communication

photos seem a good idea Theo, although Ive no idea how to do it ha ha

Lin - with a different kind of message board it'll get loads easier to upload photos and do all sorts of things, this one is quite hard to use, I find, and I spend Far Too Much time on message boards!

As to the question - a lack of bangles or other adornment round the left wrist may be a good pointer? Maybe not...

__.  If I immediately think "must be a 'spotter' - wonder if it's train, plane, or bus; but, no, no notebook" and he/she is missing the twitcher's binoculars, I'll ask "Hohner or Castignari"?  Occasionally, I'll get "no, I collect tin soldiers" or "I spend my time building model airplanes", but usually I'm right.

That's an excellent idea. I'm planning to switch to using my real name too.

My guitar-player friend swears that when I sing a capella he can hear the little stutter that comes from the bellows reversal in the middle of the scale on a quint-tuned box.

Most of the melodeon players I know run on about 1 pint of bitter or cider per tune. So after a short time, they are fairly obvious.

Oh, we don't want to frighten people off, surely. I think the ones showing the box(es) people have are much more interesting. Anyway, I'm not sure I could handle an increase in fanmail.

I'll switch to real name + photo (of me or my box...) but it would be nice if we could have avatars a little bigger than 90x90. I'm prepared to be overruled if it turns out that you're all using 16k dialup...

Hello All,

I was just updating my photo and it came out like this. Excuse me for being slightly intrusive but i laughed so much i thought i would keep it for a little while bearing in mind the current topic. Not that i look much like this now, i've bought much more facial & chest hair ;-)

I've had my pic as my avatar since day one on here- although I'm not sure that I would recognise myself so that's no help.
