I'm very pleased to learn that you and your melodeon are reunited! Also that there is no damage. Was the melodeon in its case when abandoned in the bushes by the thief?
Yours and Ian's stories about melodeon thefts (and recoveries) has made me get around to doing something I should have done a good while ago - namely taking systematic photographs of all my instruments; different angles, external and internal where appropriate. All photos then copied on to a couple of CDs and stored securely in separate places, hopefully never to be used.

hello Steve - yes, the melodeon was in a canvas 'GAMA' bag. Ironically, I suspect this was the reason it was grabbed.
And yes I've also done the photography thing, and as the box had an idiosyncratic, but very sensible arrangement of accidentals, I've made a diagram of the button layout and scanned it to disc.
The most endearing aspect of the box - to me at least - is its unusual 'silvery' tone. I've no idea what reeds are fitted, so I doubt if the tone could be replicated easily - and how do you describe tone to a manufacturer?! I've now made sure I have a decent recording of the box, so I'd be in with a chance. I find that repertoire evolves around the tone of a box; the combination of reeds used in the bass chords varies a lot, and affects the way you use them. I quite often find that tunes are not acceptably interchangeable between one box and another. Like Martin I'm often in a quandary over which box to take to a gig if I'm not playing a prescribed set in a band.
It was for this reason I realised (but only after the box had vanished!) just how precious it is to me. I'd have far rather my car had been stolen - replacement would have been both possible and straightforward, and relatively few insurance problems!
Have a good Witney! Wish I could be there.

Glad to hear you've got it back - maybe you should take some photos and publish them on the net - you never know, somebody might know what make it is!

Hi Mike, Many thanks. Yes, I suppose I could play my 'ask the audience' option and go with the majority! So far I've asked four friends. One has a box with an identical case, and it's a Cantonelli, another says it's an old Mengascini, a third thinks it's an old Maugein, while a fourth thinks the case could have been supplied to any melodeon maker by a specialist case maker. I do know that it spent most of its life in France, and was bought there by Julian Sutton.
I haven't got as far as storing pics on this iMac yet - so publishing any on this forum may be some time away, but I'll try as and when.

You could always badge it yourself - my Honer Erica that I play for morris has a sticker procaiming to to be a "Tontarelli - Made in Castlelfidaro, Italy". It came up a washing up bowl but it's a good for winding up for the melodeon anoraks.
