Greetings one and allThis is just a musing on the humble2 rowmelodeon prompted by reading posts about multifarious squeezeboxes of different sizes, shapes and systems. Leaving these other types of boxout of the equation I started wondering about the strengths and weaknesses of the 2 row, 8 bass melodeon based around my experience of the D/G.Does any other instrument have so many permutations?e.g. low notes or accidentals?low notes AND accidentals?which accidentals on push/pull?Bmaj or Bmin?thirds in or out?one, two, three voice etc?stops, couplers etc?wet/dry etc tuning?Club system?stepped or flat keyboard, open or closed?rows fourth or semitone apart?Well, you get the idea. Does any other instrument present these dis/advantages (you choose which). As far as I know if you buy a trombone or a fiddle - that's exactly what you get (apart from nuances of set-up).Discussion: Are we trying to make a simple instrument do what it wasn't designed to do or is its' very simplicity conducive to it being an "everyman" instrument - a blank canvas to create our personal musical landscape (or at least a painting-by-numbers which we can naughtily fill in with colours of our choice)?Anyway, maybe it's only me that lies awake thinking about these things - I'll soon find out.Martin

Martin,
If only other instruments were so simple, take the trombone.
Soprano, also known as slide trumpet,
Alto,
Tenor,
Base.
Now that's just for starters.
What bore would you prefer, small, medium or large as that controls which of the octaves plays easiest as well as timbre.
Mouthpiece. Rim, cup and backbore in all permutations.
Valve or slide?
And then, tenors are available with valves to change from Bb to F lowest first position note
Bass are available with two separate valves for F or G or both.
Type of wrap.
Ergonomic or not.
double folded slide or normal single.
As they used to say on the pools perm instructions, perm any whatever from whatever. Don't get me started on saxophones.
Old Bill.

to Martin.

'Lies awake thinking about these things'? No, you're certainly not alone - I've just had my box stolen - it was a 2.1/2 row in G/C with seven accidentals. Trouble is, I know nothing about music, and although I used accidentals in most of my tunes, I haven't a clue what they were! So replacing the box is looking like a nightmare, even if money were not a problem. Those who knew this box, of unknown make, but looking like an old Mengascini or Maugein, say it was probably tailored to the requirements of its original owner.
So yes, it does appear that the instrument is as personal as a conjurer's trick box - you finish up with your own range of tricks/tunes.

For the sake of others - it seems that thieves have their own boxes of tricks too, so I'll submit the story as another topic.

Frank.

Old Bill: Point taken about trombone, I was being naive and a little flippant.

Frank: There are some b*stards around aren't there? I hope you can give us a description so we can keep an eye out for it. Good luck with recovering it, it seems you have more reason to lie awake than I do.

Martin,
So was I but it is a human failing to make things seem more difficult than they are.

I feel it is also a human failing, or perhaps the essence of humanness (or humanity) to make things as complex as our little minds and monkey hands will allow. Ergo, figuring out which modes in D and A we can play on G/C 2 row boxes without any extra chromatics.
